A Classic Summer 2010

Have a classic summer and lose yourself into a good book. Sign up by visiting the library or by going to www.summerfun.portagelibrary.info starting June 11. Fill out a short form and start reading! To redeem prizes submit the titles and authors of the books you read or listen to by phone, at the library, or submit them online. You can enter titles from June 11 to August 11. Anyone 18 and over is eligible to join.

Kalamazoo in the 1940’s: a Stuart Manor Tea and Luncheon
Wednesday, June 16 12:00-1:30 pm. Travel back in time and hear what life was like in Kalamazoo during the 1940’s with local historian Steve Rossio. The menu for this tasty tea will come directly from an authentic “Victory” Recipe Book. Prepaid registration is required at the Portage Parks Department. For more information, please call 329-4522. Thursday Night at the Movies: The Great Escape (not rated)
Thursday, June 17 6:00- 8:45 pm. Introduction by Steve Rossio, Local Historian, Portage District Library The Great Escape is a 1963 American film about an escape by Allied prisoners of war from a German POW camp during World War II. It is based on the book The Great Escape by Paul Brickhill, which is a novelization of the true story of a mass escape from Stalag Luft III. The film stars Steve McQueen, James Garner, and Richard Attenborough. Free popcorn. No registration required/free.

Hot Summer Reads
Saturday, June 19, 1:00pm and Thursday, June 24 12:00pm. Enjoy hearing about the hot, sassy titles to read this summer as librarians Marsha Meyer and Nicolette Sosulski from the Portage District Library discuss their favorite books from beach reads to literary jewels. Thursday Night at the Movies: Buck Privates (not rated)
Thursday, June 24 6:30-8:00 pm. Introduction by Steve Rossio, Local Historian, Portage District Library. Buck Privates is the 1941 comedy/World War II film that turned Bud Abbott and Lou Costello into bonafide movie stars. It was the first service comedy based on the peacetime draft of 1940. Buck Privates also features the Andrews Sisters. Free popcorn.
